Gather colleagues, volunteers, friends and neighbors to plant daffodil bulbs all across Maine this November —and then celebrate in the spring when the flowers bloom. Join the fun while creating a beautiful, lasting tribute to the right to vote!
During the fight for the vote, Maine suffragists chose the jonquil (daffodil) as their flower symbol. They brought bouquets of daffodils to lobby legislators, handed them out at rallies, and asked supporters to wear them in their lapels.
So this Fall, during Maine’s Centennial Commemoration, we will plant thousands of yellow daffodils across the state. They will bloom in Spring 2020 during the national centennial—and every year thereafter as a living, renewable tribute to the suffragists and the ideal of equality for all.
Here’s How to participate:
Volunteer to help plant bulbs in Portland on Election Day and then join us for the 4th Annual Election Day Pig Roast at Rising Tide Brewing Company, featuring Centennial Pale Ale to celebrate 100 years of women's suffrage.
Organize a group planting in your community.
Order bulbs through Sara Lennon for pick-up at Creative Portland on November 1st.
Make checks payable to: League of Women Voters of Maine Education Fund and mail to Sara Lennon, 54 Cranbrook Drive, Cape Elizabeth, Maine 04107.
Donate a plot of land for planting, sponsor a group to plant on your company’s behalf, or become a Daffodil Tribute Sponsor.
Go to your local nursery and buy bulbs to plant before the first frost. If you buy early, remember to store them in a cool, dry place.
Help us spread the word on social media, email, local newspapers, company updates and conversation with colleagues and friends.
